The Wayne, Luanne and Peri Widener Fund for the Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases
A Huntsville family has established a named fund to support research at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. The Wayne, Luanne and Peri Widener Fund for the Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases honors the memory of Wayne Widener. Neurodegeneration is a broad term for the progressive loss of structure or function, and possibly the death, of neurons. Some diseases that occur because of neurodegenerative processes include ALS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease. Research about these incurable diseases will help unlock keys to possible treatments, and potentially, cures. Named funds at HudsonAlpha can be designated to support any of the areas that the Institute is researching, combining the passion of donors with the work of scientists.
Anonymous Donation
The HudsonAlpha Foundation received a $525,000 donation from an anonymous donor to help support the new Smith Family Clinic for Genomic Medicine.
“We are so excited to support the new genomic medicine team at HudsonAlpha and look forward to the rapid diagnosis and treatment of patients based on their unique genomes,” the anonymous donor stated. “This highly respected team is here to change how medicine is practiced and we are humbled to be a small part of it.” You can support the clinic by donating to HudsonAlpha and directing your gift to the Clinic for Genomic Medicine.
Huntsville family uses planned giving to support HudsonAlpha
When members of the Evans family decided to give HudsonAlpha a large gift, they chose a unique way to contribute. They decided to donate a beautiful, undeveloped tract of land to HudsonAlpha. HudsonAlpha in turn will be able to sell the land to help fund all core missions. The Evans family encourages others who are interested in supporting HudsonAlpha to investigate planned giving options. In 2016, HudsonAlpha will host four planned giving seminars. The first is January 28. Support from Foundations and Businesses
The HudsonAlpha Foundation recently received several grants, including a $100,000 grant from the Jane K. Lowe Foundation to help establish our clinical genomics program, a three-year $75,000 commitment from the Mike and Gillian Goodrich Foundation for teacher training and a $50,000 award from the Boeing Company Charitable Trust to support resource development for teachers across Alabama. Also, Lockheed Martin Space Systems made a $20,000 gift in support of Touching Triton, the free online digital education activity.
