HudsonAlpha – Postdoctoral position in molecular and evolutionary genomics of pigmentation

The HudsonAlpha institute for Biotechnology is seeking a postdoctoral position in molecular and evolutionary genomics of mammalian color variation is available in the group of Dr. Greg Barsh at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, Huntsville, Ala. The position is funded by the HudsonAlpha Institute for an initial period of one year with a yearly extension of up to four years contingent on research accomplishments and successful career development.

The major focus of the group is to investigate and characterize mammalian color variation in both natural and selected populations (such as humans, domestic dogs and laboratory mice) as a tool to understand fundamental aspects of cell signaling and gene action, and as a model system for complex traits of biomedical significance. More information about the group and our interests can be found in Candille et al. (Science 318:1418-1423, 2007), McGowan et al. (Nature Genetics 40:963-970, 2008), and Anderson et al. (Science 323:1141-1143, 2009), and at www.hudsonalpha.org. Specific research projects available for postdoctoral study are based on the application of massively parallel sequencing technologies to study eye, hair and skin color in humans, or stripe and spot patterns in other mammals, by statistical association between phenotypic variation and genome variation, within and across species.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. and a background in genomics, with specific expertise in computational biology and/or statistical genetics, and a strong interest in the application of genome variation to understand whole animal phenotypes. We seek a highly talented, dynamic, independent and self-motivated young biologist with good social skills, who will work directly with the group leader and other lab personnel in a highly collaborative environment built around a core of genomic technology and computational infrastructure.

The HudsonAlpha Institute opened in 2008 as the cornerstone of a 152-acre campus with goals to carry out cutting-edge biomedical research enabled by genomic technology, provide an interface for synergy between academic scientists and entrepreneurs, and educate students, teachers and citizens of the surrounding community about the opportunities and rewards in biology and medicine. The institute is located in Huntsville, a major center for science and engineering in North Alabama at the foot of the Appalachians, and at the intersection of major universities including Emory, The University of Georgia, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Alabama, UAHuntsville and Vanderbilt.

To apply for this position, please send a single pdf file including: (1) a cover letter explaining why you would like to join our group, (2) your Curriculum Vitae (including a description of your skills), (3) your publication list, (4) a statement of research interests, and (5) contact details for 2-3 academic references who are willing to write a reference letter on your behalf.

Candidates who meet the listed requirements should send a resume to  resumes@hudsonalpha.org and reference Postdoctoral position in molecular and evolutionary genomics in the subject line.  Informal inquiries are welcome and should be sent to the same e-mail address.
