Alabama Governor Kay Ivey recently awarded HudsonAlpha and Auburn University $2.27 million through the Alabama Research and Development Enhancement Fund. The fund was established to encourage new and continuing efforts to conduct research and development activities within the state.
HudsonAlpha is working to build the infrastructure for a shared portal of genetic profiles. The Institute received $969,409.
“The ideal scenario is one in which patients have real control of their own genetic data and that they have the ability to share that with their physicians when they move from one physician to another,” said Devin Absher, PhD, HudsonAlpha faculty investigator and director of genomic health.
Absher explains in an interview with WAFF 48.
“This fund will enable our universities, hospitals, research institutions and others to develop and bring to fruition ideas that will improve lives and create jobs,” Gov. Ivey said in a statement. “I am tremendously encouraged by this program and its potential in Alabama. I am pleased to award these grants to Auburn University and HudsonAlpha.” The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants.
