Can I attend this workshop if I have already attended a GREAT Workshop in another location this year?

Yes! This GREAT Workshop is the start of a new round of content- so any teachers who attended a workshop in the past are eligible to attend. We will also be in Mobile, Fall, 2014; Huntsville, Winter, 2015; and Birmingham, Fall, 2015.

I am a middle school teacher. Can I attend?

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer content for middle school teachers at this workshop. We hope to have middle school specific professional development opportunities in the future, so check back with us!

I have to leave early; can I still participate in the GREAT Workshop?

Yes, you may attend sessions. However, only those teachers that complete the full schedule of both days' sessions will be eligible to receive the tub of classroom kits, valued at ~$400.

Can I get STIPD credit for this workshop?

Yes, you will be able to register for the Montgomery GREAT Workshop on STIPD. Registrants will be notified once that information is available.

Does GREAT connect to ACOS and AP science standards?

Yes- the following Alabama Course of Study and AP Science Standards will be addressed:

  • Biology COS 6, 7, 8
  • Genetics 2, 3, 4, 8, 9
  • AP Biology Big Idea 2 and 3
  • Anatomy and Physiology- Several forms of cancer (melanoma, prostate cancer, etc) are listed as examples of diseases affecting specific systems.

Will I be compensated for mileage or lodging costs?

The Montgomery GREAT Workshop will offer a limited number of $250 travel reimbursements to public, high school life science educators whose schools are 60+ miles from the Alabama Department of Archives and History building. There is an application process for travel support, and the limited funding will be awarded based on the information provided in the application. Will meals be provided?

Yes, GREAT Workshop participants will receive lunch and snacks throughout the workshop. We hope to keep your stomach happy and your brain engaged!

I have special dietary needs; will there be anything for me to eat?

Yes, we can accommodate a variety of special dietary needs. Please be sure to include that information in your registration, being as specific as possible. 

What is in the tub teachers will receive upon completion of the workshop?

The teacher tool kit is packed in a 16-gallon Sterilite tub and contains:

  • Modeling Mendel's Laws Classroom Kit
  • HNPCC Classroom Kit Paper version including voucher for the wet lab
  • A cancer mutation simulation kit
  • A Next Gen Sequencing Flow Cell for demo

Teachers will also receive a binder, a 2013 Guidebook and a flash drive of digital resources and teaching materials

Where will I park?

There is free, available parking for this workshop. Parking instructions will be included in the pre-workshop packet sent to the home shipping address indicated on your registration about 2 weeks before the workshop. Can I get a schedule for the GREAT Workshop?

Of course you can! Participants will receive a detailed schedule of the day upon registration and check in.

I didn't receive a confirmation e-mail; am I registered? 

All participants should receive a confirmation e-mail from Eventbrite at the time of registration. If you have not received any communication from us by January 17th, including the pre-workshop packet in the mail, please check your Spam folder and confirm your e-mail on your registration to make sure it is correct.
