The GREAT Workshop provides opportunities for Alabama public high school life science educators to update genetics knowledge and discover recent scientific findings that are too new for
textbooks. In two full days of small group concurrent sessions and talks by dynamic speakers, teachers will learn about recent findings and applications that relate to health, agriculture and the environment. 

 

 

This second round of GREAT workshops will dig into cell division by working through the following*:

• How do chromosomes behave during cell division?
• What regulates the cell cycle?
• How does cancer occur?
• How is DNA sequencing changing the way cancer is treated?
• How can I teach these concepts to my students?

*This content is limited to high school, life science teachers and is not designed for middle school teachers.

The GREAT Workshop will be held at
the Daphne Civic Center, 
September 11-12, 2014 from 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. each day.

Alabama public high school teachers will be reimbursed for substitute costs to their schools or district. Additionally, teachers who complete both days of the workshop will return to the classroom with lesson plans and hands-on materials that are student-tested, informative and that link to state course of study objectives.  

Those who attended the January 2014 Montgomery GREAT Workshops are ineligible to attend.

The Mobile GREAT Workshop will offer a limited number of $250 travel reimbursements to Alabama public high school life science educators whose schools are 50+ miles from the Daphne Civic Center. There will be an application process for travel support, and the limited funding will be awarded based on the information provided in the application.
