Cooking for a cause: join us at The Ledges with Sister Schubert Barnes and Betty Sims

Sister Schubert Barnes and Betty Sims have been cooking up delicious treats for years for family and friends. The nationally-renowned baker whose rolls are a household name, and the creator of Southern Scrumptious teamed up on a cookbook project “Celebrations of the Heart” to share their love of cooking and entertaining. Join the HudsonAlpha Foundation for “Recipes for Hope: Supporting ALS Research” on Tuesday, May 8 and meet Sister Schubert Barnes and Betty Sims.

The event will raise funds for a collaborative project, called Impacting ALS, between HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and the Crestwood ALS Care Clinic. HudsonAlpha scientists will conduct genomic sequencing and analysis of ALS patients to better understand the underlying cause of the disease.

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

“Crestwood has had a strong clinical relationship with the ALS chapter, our patients, and physicians and staff who really go above and beyond to take care of patients, but this project is the next step,” said Pam Hudson, MD, CEO of Crestwood Medical Center. “We need to get to the cause of the disease, and not solely focus on the treatment.”

In the beginning stages, the project will enroll patients that are currently being treated at the Crestwood ALS Care Clinic, where physicians and researchers will collaborate to return and discuss results with families.

“HudsonAlpha collaborates with institutions all over the world. It is especially exciting to be working on a project like this in Huntsville,” said Rick Myers, PhD, HudsonAlpha president and science director, “so we appreciate Crestwood’s support and look forward to making even more advances in ALS.”

Cost to attend is $75. Guests will receive Betty and Sister’s popular cookbook, “Celebrations from the Heart.” Delicious samples from the cookbook will also be served at the event. Proceeds will benefit the Impacting ALS project. To RSVP for the event by May 3, visit https://hudsonalpha.org/ALS-tea-registration or call 256-327-0442.

Additional gifts are being accepted and will be used to enroll even more patients who are battling ALS. Donations to Impacting ALS can be made online or mailed to the HudsonAlpha Foundation at 601 Genome Way, Huntsville, AL 35806.
