Who can attend?

This workshop is for CTE Agriscience teachers in public high schools within the state of Alabama. Teachers from other content areas, private or out-of-state schools are not eligible.

Is there a cost?

No! This workshop is available at no cost to Alabama public high school CTE Agriscience teachers thanks to support from the State of Alabama. Qualified teachers will also receive a stipend and resources for use in their classroom.

I teach in a private school, can I attend?

No, this workshop is not open to private school teachers. Please visit the HudsonAlpha website for information about other professional development offerings that may be available for private school teachers.

What topics will be discussed?

The 2014 topic is Modern Agriscience: Pipettes and Plows and will focus on biotechnology applications in agriculture. Specific topics for this session include genetic modification of agriculturally significant plants, search for sustainable biofuels, new biotech discoveries with agriscience applications and student-friendly approaches to agriscience biotech concepts.

Is this material I can use with my students?

All materials, labs and resources are designed for use with high school students in agriscience classrooms. Some of the content discussions are designed to support teachers’ personal content knowledge. Educators are expected to use their professional judgment about which topics should be addressed in their classrooms.

How will my stipend be paid?

A meal stipend will be deposited shortly before the start of the workshop. The remaining $150 educator stipend will be paid upon completion of the workshop. All stipends will be paid via electronic funds transfer. Teachers will supply banking information for those deposits.

Are attendees reimbursed for mileage?

No. HudsonAlpha will provide lodging, meals and a $150 stipend to each of the participants.

What do I need to bring?

Teachers are encouraged, but not required, to bring a laptop or personal tablet. All other workshop materials will be provided.

What are the hours each day?

The workshop will run over three days. It will begin at 12:30 pm on July 22, and will run from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm on July 23, and from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm on July 24.

What will I get for attending?

Attending teachers will receive 14 clock hours of professional development credit and a $150 stipend. In addition, teachers will receive a tub of kits and resources for use in their classroom valued at approximately $700.
