Overview

GMOD KitsStudents will take on the role of a cytogeneticist working in a hospital or clinic. Students will be given a case study and a vial of vinyl cling chromosomes. They will then arrange the chromosomes on a prepared board into a completed karyotype. Students then analyze the karyotype and diagnose their patient. Many types of chromosomal abnormalities are presented, though normal karyotypes are also represented. Students will also explore the more current techniques of FISH (Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization) and array CGH analysis (micro array based Comparative Genomic Hybridization). Some students may need to utilize a FISH image to properly diagnose their patient.
