The Center for Genomic Medicine provides a range of genomic service offerings to academic and commercial customers utilizing the state-of-the-art Genomic Services Laboratory (GSL), located at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. Featuring cutting-edge research tools, the GSL generates the highest quality of genomic data and has supported more than 1,100 projects and 30,000 samples since its establishment in 2009 by Dr. Shawn Levy.
Advanced Technology and Diverse Capabilities
With more than a dozen DNA sequencing instruments representing all major technologies, as well as investment in the Illumina HiSeq X Ten System, the GSL distinguishes itself with highly optimized workflows and methods to handle hundreds of projects, thousands of samples, and the production of quality data. The Illumina HiSeq X Ten provides an exponential increase in capacity, enabling large-scale whole-genome sequencing projects while reducing costs.
The GSL continually strengthens its technical capabilities, routinely collaborating with many of the major technology vendors to improve the performance and efficiency of genomic technologies. The recent addition of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) licensed clinical sequencing services further facilitates the translation of research results into new clinical care approaches.
In addition to advanced technology, the Center provides diverse capabilities in bioinformatics as well as statistical and computational analyses with the support of experienced teams of scientists from both HudsonAlpha Computational Biology and Bioinformatics group and the Genomics Core Laboratories (GCL) at the Heflin Center for Genomic Sciences at UAB. These capabilities ensure that data are analyzed and interpreted to the highest standards of validity and reliability. The Genomics Core Laboratories (GCL) at the Heflin Center also provides genome sequencing, expression, methylation analysis, and epidemiological support to investigators.
