A generous Boeing grant will help HudsonAlpha’s educational outreach team launch another new program.
Raising the Trajectory: Next Steps for Advancing Teacher Development will take graduates of the Institute’s Genetic Technologies for Alabama Classrooms to the next level. The nearly $14,000 grant will enable 10 GTAC graduates to attend the National Association of Biology Teachers conference in Atlanta this fall.
Teachers will identify an area students consistently find daunting and create a conference plan focusing on the challenging material. Each educator will present a classroom activity as part of the conference proceedings. Teachers will also microblog throughout the conference and share relevant findings with colleagues post-conference.
“This is a unique and exciting opportunity for HudsonAlpha and GTAC graduates,” said Neil Lamb, Ph.D., vice president for educational outreach. “It demonstrates Boeing’s ongoing commitment to Alabama’s youth, ensuring that their educators are equipped with the knowledge needed to not only help students understand the relevance of biotechnology, but to excel in this exciting and growing field.”
Among highlights of the conference, HudsonAlpha educators will lead a half-day workshop on medical genomics with the Emory University Department of Human Genetics.
According to Lamb, Raising the Trajectory could directly impact depth of learning and teaching strategies for 1,500 Alabama students in the first year.
