BBVA Compass supports “Science for me too!”

HudsonAlpha's educational outreach team received a big boost from BBVA Compass Bank. The local company donated $XXXX toward the institute's Science For Me Too! program.

This effort creates opportunities for under-served populations of students to experience science activities and laboratories outside of the regular school day. Through the generous support of BBVA Compass Bank, more than 150 elementary and middle school students in high- needs areas have participated in Sci-Quest Science Center activities including science field trips and summer camps.

In addition, a core group of high school students, along with their mentors from the local 100 Black Men of America chapter, participate in regular Science Saturday meetings at HudsonAlpha. These students are able to investigate career options, practice laboratory skills and reinforce genetics concepts from their school work while working with Education Outreach staff.

HudsonAlpha educator, Madelene Loftin said this about the program: "Science For Me Too! is important because it allows these students to 'try on' careers in science and really see themselves working in this environment. The students come in, put on a lab coat and get to 'do science'. After several visits, the guys are getting more independent in the lab and more confident in their abilities. We are all grateful to BBVA Compass for helping make this opportunity possible for these students."
