2011 Tie the Ribbons

This year’s Tie the Ribbons luncheon turned out to be the biggest yet, in both attendance and fundraising. We here at HudsonAlpha are extremely grateful to all who participated.

The event figuratively and literally ties together the signature ribbons of breast cancer (pink) and ovarian cancer (teal). The event’s purpose: to raise critical research funds and build awareness of both diseases.

Approximately 400 guests helped in the fight against ovarian and breast cancer by attending Tie the Ribbons, Thursday, October 20, at the Jackson Center. Cancer survivors Dr. Debra Moriarty and Bonnie Moore spoke to the audience. Moriarty shared her experiences with breast cancer and Moore spoke about her battles with ovarian and breast cancers.

HudsonAlpha faculty investigator Dr. Devin Absher updated attendees on some of the most recent discoveries related to both ovarian and breast cancers. Board member Irma Tuder served as the event emcee.

The National Cancer Institute estimates that more than 230,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011; nearly 40,000 are expected to die from the disease by year’s end. The NCI also estimates there will be just under 22,000 new cases of ovarian cancer this year, with approximately 15,460 women dying from the disease.

Again, we extend our sincere gratitude to all who support the fight against ovarian and breast cancers through HudsonAlpha research, including the 2011 sponsors listed below.
