DNA Day Art Competition
The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology invites artists to participate in its DNA Day Art Competition and submit original work inspired by DNA, genetics and biotechnology. Pictured: Code Cracked, the 2009 winning DNA Day Art Competition entry.
The winning artist will receive a $1,000 cash award for the purchase of the work, which will become a permanent part of the institute’s collection. The work will be reproduced on promotional materials related to the contest. All rights of ownership in and to the corresponding art, including all rights to use, reproduce, publish, modify, edit and distribute the same will become the exclusive property of HudsonAlpha and will not be returned. Additionally, five finalists will be announced and have their art work displayed at the institute as part of the DNA Day Art Exhibition held April 19-May 31.
THEME: In the broadest sense, biotechnology is the use of biological processes, organisms or systems to develop products aimed to improve some aspect of life. Biotechnology at its roots is a very old science, stretching back 7,000 years to the creation of bread, cheese, wine and vinegar (which all depend on harnessing and modifying some biological process). The field has expanded dramatically over the last quarter century, powered by our understanding of DNA, the recipe for life inside the nucleus of our cells. This recipe provides the instructions to make proteins and all the structures of the cell. There are approximately 20,000 individual recipes (known as genes), inside each human cell. Small changes in the genetic recipe result in the diversity of life seen in our world. Some changes alter the risk of developing certain diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cancer. Biotechnology combines the disciplines of molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, biochemistry and embryology, which in turn are linked to additional fields such as chemical engineering, information technology and robotics. Over the next few years, biotechnology is poised to heavily impact several areas of society, including healthcare, the environment and agriculture.
