HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Feb. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- EGEN, Inc. today announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has awarded the company a four-year grant of $1,600,000 to assist in the Phase II clinical development of EGEN-001, the company's lead product. EGEN-001 is under clinical development for the treatment of advanced recurrent ovarian cancer.  EGEN has successfully completed two Phase I trials of EGEN-001 in ovarian cancer patients.

Dr. Joe NgHUNTSVILLE, Ala. - A Huntsville startup company is using the emerging science of synthetic biology to create "biological Legos" scientists can use to modify living organisms. Dr. Joseph Ng's company, iXpressGenes, is making genes "from scratch" now in a laboratory at HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. "Scratch" is the key word, Ng said last week. "Instead of cutting and pasting existing genes, we are creating new ones," Ng said.

Passengers flying into and out of Huntsville's International Airport last year couldn't miss the big, curving excavations in Cummings Research Park.

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- General Electric says its healthcare unit will buy diagnostics company Clarient in a deal to speed its expansion into cancer diagnostic and therapy selection tools.

The company says the deal values Clarient, which is an associate company at Huntsville's HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, at $580 million net of cash and investments.

Serina Therapeutics appoints CEO

Huntsville, Ala. -- Serina Therapeutics today announced the appointment of Randall Moreadith, M.D., Ph.D., as chief executive officer.   Dr. Moreadith will lead the company’s business and financial strategy and will also oversee drug development, including clinical and regulatory strategies.

The Partnership for Biotechnology Research, along with the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, will host the BioDefense Symposium on Oct. 19 and 20, 2010.  The symposium will take place at the Jackson Conference Center, adjacent to HudsonAlpha on the Cummings Research Park Biotechnology Campus and will be preceded by the PBR Scholarship Fund Benefit Golf Tournament, to be held Oct. 18 through 20 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.  Symposium attendees will range from academics, scientists and business development professionals to private and government personnel in the biodefense and defense industries.
